not_funafter allowing haxardagron @twitter to examine the inner workings of the site, some conclusions have been reached.
1- there was some php running amok, specifically mediawiki. haxar disabled mediawiki to see if that helped.
2- disabling mediawiki helped, marginally. the site is still going down, though. haxar's assertation is that it is not any of my sites overloading the server but some other user.
since dreamhost has repeatedly told me it was my fault (and we know now it wasn't) and insisted i pay them 190$ for a VPS to fix it, i'm pretty pissed off. tydusis pegged it when he said it sounded like the Ferengi had come back in time to take over dreamhost. the memory is either being intentionally throttled or they're just allowing some other user to choke all of the other sites on the server without repercussion. either one is pretty shitty admining.
so at the moment i'm talking to a couple people who have offered to host. i'm looking for a nice combo of accountability, affordability, and willingness to help because tbh i'm not the most knowledgable of webmasters. to compare it to automobile ownership, i know how to drive the thing, change a battery, change the oil, and change a tire but nothing fancy. i'm going to need serious help to move anything that involves a database. there's a zencart and a forum both running on there - i'm worried about both of those. i also have a wiki database i saved before we broke it.
the sites themselves used 70gb of bandwith last month. i'd prefer more than that, because there's slow months and then there's heavy months. unlimited would be best. the sites also take up about 20gb of space, but again, more is always good. especially because between sunyshore and inhuman we're always adding more data and images. haxar said something about memory spiking at 9cpu? but that's A) on a shared server and B) i'm not sure what that really means.
SO. there's the specs. i'm writing to dreamhost now asking for at least a partial refund of the 2-year hosting plan i JUST paid for. i'm really disappointed in them, because they used to be a really good host. but this shake-down for VPS customers is really just shit. a partial refund means at least i can give gin back some of the $$ she fronted for it. blarf.
