short on memory

let's talk about issues i'm having with the site.
some people might have noticed my site keeps going down. not a lot of people but y'know. it keeps going down. a lot. and that means it drags down sunyshore.com too. basicly my whole account just keeps going down.
now i've contacted dreamhost about 15 times over this. the only answer they can give me is that the site is taking up too much of the memory allotted to users. and me, i find this really strange for a few reasons.
1- memory is allotted via users, so i set it so that each site (demon-sushi, sunyshore, etc) have their own users. this should have fixed it and it didn't.
2- there have been no major site changes, and yet this problem JUST started.
3- there has been no major spike in site traffic either.
4- dreamhost says that it's a one-two punch from both inhuman and sunyshore. sunyshore gets a lot of traffic but shouldn't chomp memory like this, especially when gin is taking orders via the community and NOT the shop itself.
i've tried to check the memory usage via putty, but dreamhost's wiki on how to do that is broken i guess? i get an error when i input the command they tell you to, seems like there's a space missing or added where there shouldn't be one or something. i don't know, i cop to the fact that i'm not at all adept with anything remotely command prompt related. i know how to handle the MUD, sort of, and i know HTML. that's about it.
so at the moment i'm stuck constantly waiting on dreamhost tech support to respond to me. this sucks, because they never actually TELL ME what's eating the memory, they just tell me to upgrade to a VPS. i do not want to upgrade to a VPS (for 190$ a year) when the problem could possibly be addressed for free. y'know?
if there are any adept geeks out there who could lend me a hand, it'd be greatly appriciated. something must be broken or running amok, because it wasn't doing this in november and there've been no significant changes since then.
in short, ffffffff.
